Very sad to hear of Elliott Smith’s death this week. That someone of his talent was so depressed that he couldn’t see any point going on is quite an arresting thought… Although I wasn’t a fan as such (I’m only starting to discover more of his music now), I thought he wrote beautiful songs, and the song I started with today is an absolute pop gem. I can only quote the man himself:
Wes Anderson chose Elliott’s “Needle in a Haystack” for the (attempted) suicide scene in The Royal Tennenbaums, but rather than depress us with more thoughts of suicide I decided to play the beautiful Nico song Anderson also included on that soundtrack. It’s a Jackson Browne cover, and I’ve now discovered that Elliott actually played a cover of it live, in his hometown of Portland in 1999. Through the magic of filesharing, I might play it on next week’s show. Elliott Smith - Waltz #2 (XO) [Dreamworks]

Utility Fog teeters on the cusp between acoustic and electronic, organic and digital. Constantly changing and rearranging, this aural cloud of nanotech will take you from deep within the world of post-rock (where live musicians sometimes sound like machines), through the realms of folktronica (where acoustic instruments are chopped and processed into new forms) and into the outer reaches of plunderphonics, idm and breakcore (where jungle breaks splatter against the bleeding remains of yesterday's and today's pop). Since all these genre names are already pretty ridiculous, we thought we'd coin a new one. So "postfolkrocktronica" it is. Wear it.
