Playlist 30.01.05 (9:05 pm)
Starting tonight with one of the 3″ CDs from ROOM40 that I mentioned last week - some nice slightly bent indie-folk stuff. More of that, glitched-up subterranean guitar dirges from Keith Mason. Later, a bunch of awesome new(ish) breakcore, including a great new double vinyl comp from a local label. Later on, some gorgeous solo piano from Gonzales, Sage Francis teams up with Will Oldham, something rare I was able to snap up with one of the first copies of the new Hood album, not to mention some classic Miles Davis from In A Silent Way, ambient jazz precursor to everything from the Necks and Talk Talk to Squarepusher and more… Ben Thompson - untitled track 1 from very limited 3″ CD [ROOM40] Sunday, 23rd of January, 2005

Tonight a bit of stuff which is new to Utility Fog, if not to the world. Hungarian artist Tigrics has a few albums out which I’m ashamed not to have discovered earlier, and I’ll be playing a few tracks of his tonight. Also received some excellent new 3″s on Brisbane’s ROOM40 label, whose head honcho Lawrence English played @ Frigid tonight - unfortunately didn’t manage to play ‘em, so next week we’ll have lots from those releases… Community service announcement: that perennial Kid, Miguel Depedro aka Kid 606, is playing @ the Beck’s Festival Bar this coming Friday, the 28th. This little kid has a FourPlay gig on, but I do recommend heading down there to catch him if you can - last time he played he blew everyone’s heads right off with a set that surpassed everything he’s released, so it’s fair to say that even if you’re not the biggest fan of his albums, you’ll likely enjoy the show! Oh, and the price has gone down from $35 to $25… Blastcorp - dropp (cover of Autechre track from EP7!) [self-released] Sunday, 16th of January, 2005
Playlist 16.01.05 (6:36 pm)
Tonight, tonight… In all honesty, there’s not a lot to say, hey. There are a few new tidbits to thrill and chill, and a few select older things I’ve pulled out, and a bunch of stuff in the middle. How descriptive! And a few longer tracks make the playlist seem short… Simon & Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy In New York [CBS]

Bit of Grime to start tonight, and later on a look into the relationship between Grime and drum’n'bass… Bit more new stuff tonight, and some , er older stuff too. Nothing too crazy and experimental tonight, more of a lazy summer show. Well, ok there were a few fairly odd sounds (how about that Himawari shit!) mixed in there ;) Dizzee Rascal - Dream [XL Recordings]

Wow! It’s 2005! And I’m 31! It’s my birthday today, so I’ve decided to… well, effectively to give myself a much bigger job by going all-out with a genre-defying show of “stuff wot I like”. We had gypsy-klezmer, folk-jazz, indie-punk, you name it, with a bit over half-hour drum’n'bass mix at the end, just to add some regional colour to the proceedings. Back to normal next week, I promise! Can - Oh Yeah [Spoon Records/Mute]

Utility Fog teeters on the cusp between acoustic and electronic, organic and digital. Constantly changing and rearranging, this aural cloud of nanotech will take you from deep within the world of post-rock (where live musicians sometimes sound like machines), through the realms of folktronica (where acoustic instruments are chopped and processed into new forms) and into the outer reaches of idm and experimental electronica (where artificial intelligences skitter and crackle, and may just pull at your heart-strings). Since all these genre names are already pretty ridiculous, we thought we'd coin a new one. So "postfolkrocktronica" it is. Wear it. We got tasty rss2, rss or atom feeds - get Utility Fog playlists in your favourite RSS reader/aggregator. Other FBi Radio shows with blogs/online playlists: Fat Planet Vertigo Oh no! It's Levins!
