    Re the 1991 Sydney Retrospective,

It seems FBI was way out of its depth last night presenting an overview of 1991. Presenter Angela Stengel admitting very early on in the show she wasn’t very aware of what was happening around this time.
She was 10yrs old in 1991 – when you’re presenting a show on a subject of which you know very little, what do you do? You ask and speak to people who WERE around the traps at this time for some valuable background info.

And THREE Clouds songs? Come on, this wasn’t a Sydney Retro, this was an Angela Stengel Retro. While we’re at it, the Hummingbird shouldn’t have even been played, everyone knowing that vavavoom was their most pitiful recorded effort.

If you were aware of 91 and spoke with authority about this time, I wouldn’t have sat at home with a cringe tryna make sense of it. Where were Nunbait? Where were Crow? Where were Plug Uglies? Where were Massappeal?

Gee I miss Dan Buhagiar. This isn’t a personal attack – it’s just that if youre going to do a credible job of presenting a retrospective show, you’ve got to do it right and with more knowledge than what was presented last night.

thanks. I’ll keep listening, but, I’ll be keeping a close ear on things….

    Hi Hank,

Thanks for your comment. All comments are appreciated but I thought I’d just fill you in on the situation a little more.

Last night’s show was supposed to be the Sunnyboys, but due to tragic circumstances it was cancelled late in the afternoon leaving me only a couple of hours to prepare something to go in its place.

You’re right that speaking to people who were around at the time would’ve been great for the show, but this was obviously impossible at such late notice.

FBi is a station that runs on minimal amount of money and so the CD library is almost completely void of any releases from 1991 – certainly all the releases you mentioned even though I know those artists and tried to get their music. Everything you heard last night, with the exception of The Cannanes, was sourced at the last minute through suggestions and CDs from my producers, and they WERE a part of the Sydney scene in 1991.

As for the Hummingbirds and the Clouds, well, we’re all entitled to our opinions as to the quality of their music, but that’s not going to change the fact that those tracks were released in 1991 and THAT’S why they were played.

I don’t claim to be an authority on any part of Sydney music history, which is why the show relies on knowledgeable guests and a team of producers. I gave out the number in the studio a number of times and you were welcome to call to correct anything that I may have said, as well as voice your opinion on what you thought was missing from the show.

Music is what FBi is all about and so I know that many listeners were happy to hear two hours two hours jam packed with music not heard on radio all that often.

    Angela

Angela- despite Hank’s comments, it look like a pretty representitive selection from the period and everything can’t be included. Seemed OK to me and I was indeed there also (ex doppelgangers 1989 – 1993) Perhaps people who have rare material could donate copies to the FBi library.

  4. Angela Says:

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the comment. I agree that any rare material donated to the FBi library would be a great idea and gladly accepted! We’re quite happy to put burnt CDs into the library too (given that a lot of stuff is out of print).

I’m the proud owner of a Doppelgangers 12″ – Sweet Smell. It’s a great track! I don’t know that we’ve played any Doppelgangers on the show yet, but there’s definitely a place for it.
