that update was wrong, Andy Sugg defintely was there last night, it was a quartet show)
Next month sees the return of Kris Wanders & Andy Sugg to Adelaide. Details of the shows are here (along with more info about Kris Wanders). This is exciting news, the shows I’ve seen by these guys were incredibly good. In particular for fans of free jazz I would rate them as absolutely unmissable.
Here is a 4 part video showing Wanders with a group which includes the drummer (Qba Janicki) who’ll be joining him for both shows here, and the bassist (Slawek Janicki) who’ll play at the Exeter.
The show at Big Star will also feature Tom Fryer on fretless guitar (also not playing ?)
Also lots of interesting news at the Feel Presents site – including confirmation that there’ll be Don’t Look Back concerts early next year (The Laughing Clowns perhaps? Maybe Mr Uddich Schmuddich Goes to Town AKA the greatest Australian album ever?), and tours by Dinosaur Jr and Yo La Tengo.

Starting this week and continuing into next week at the Adelaide Cinémathèque isLives of Shadow and Light: The Films of Ingmar Bergman. I’ve written about the Cinémathèque recently, and also wrote about Bergman here. One of the highlights of last year’s program was Bergman’s The Seventh Seal and this year we’re lucky enough to get three of his films. If you’ve not yet been to the Cinémathèque then now would be a good time to go. I’ll quote the descriptions of the three films from the Cinémathèque website, together with some relevant Youtube videos
7:30pm Monday 24 August
THE VIRGIN SPRING
Sweden 1960 88mins 35mm
When a devout young girl is raped and killed by goat herders, the most sacred beliefs of her deeply religious parents are challenged as they become consumed by a violent need for justice and revenge. Based on a medieval ballad set in 14th century Sweden, this allegorical tale examines the conflicts of a society transitioning from Paganism to Christianity. It is also notable for being the unlikely inspiration for Wes Craven’s notorious nasty Last House on the Left. Stars Birgitta Valberg and Max von Sydow. Print courtesy of the ACMI collection.
7:30pm Thursday 27 August
CRIES AND WHISPERS
Sweden 1972 91mins 35mm
Terminally ill Agnes is joined at her bedside by sisters Maria and Karin as she waits to die. But as her sisters’ jealousies and resentment surface, much of Agnes’ emotional comfort is left to Anna her devoted and fatalistic maid. Through a series of flashbacks, the inner lives of these women are examined as each one recounts a painful moment in their lives in this intense, disturbing and powerful family drama about repression, spirituality, sexual passion, hatred and death. Stars Harriet Andersson, Ingrid Thulin and Liv Ullmann. Print courtesy of the ACMI collection. Listed in 1001 Films You Must See Before You Die
7:30pm Monday 31 August
WILD STRAWBERRIES
Sweden 1957 93mins 35mm
As a cynical, ageing academic, travels with his daughter-in-law to receive an honorary University degree, he also embarks on a journey from emotional isolation to personal redemption. Reliving his past through a series of memories and dreams that blur reality and imagination, Professor Borg recalls his childhood with its wild strawberry patch and his childhood sweetheart, his elderly mother alone in her large house, and his long-dead wife, bitter and disappointed by her husband’s inability to love. Stars Bibi Andersson, Max Von Sydow and Victor Sjöström. Print courtesy of the ACMI collection.
Winner Golden Berlin Bear Berlin Film Festival 1958
Listed in 1001 Films You Must See Before You Die
Also an interview with Woody Allen about Ingmar Bergman (he talks about Cries and Whispers in particular in part 2)
Perhaps I should consider a name change to the Ed Kuepper fan blog or something to that effect. Anyway, this message is up on the Laughing Clowns myspace page:
The Laughing Clowns, following the enormous success of the last shows MAY be doing some select live dates in Australia. January 2010 had been mentioned. Nothing is confirmed. We will post when we know. Love you all. Expect something special.
Well, if anything will take my mind of the fact that I’m not at Mt Buller at an ATP festival in January then this is it.
In the meantime, the ABC will be showing a live Laughing Clowns show on Thursday the 17th of Sepetember as part of their Live at the Basement series (so it’s one of the shows from early May).
Having finished touring as a Bad Seeds, Ed will be bringing the Kowalski Collective back to Adelaide. They played a great show at the Gov last year, and I’m hoping that Ed will now be at work on a follow-up to Jean Lee & the Yellow Dog and perhaps we’ll get to hear some of it. Full details of the national tour are at the Feel Presents site.
Here are some videos of Ed & the Kowalski Collective in action at the Don’t Look Back performances of Honey Steel’s Gold last year.
Also recently announced, Love of Diagrams visit the Jade Monkey in October, and Jarvis Cocker plays at HQ in December.
If you don’t want to wait so long for gigs then note that there are loads of them this month. I’d particularly like to recommend Dan V‘s residency at the Exeter on Monday nights all month. He plays guitar in Like Leaves (who played an excellent set at the Metro last weekend) and has previously played in a number of other bands including Headdress of Neon Flames. His shows at the Exeter are all solo, and on the evidence of last night (as well as a bunch of other Dan V solo shows I’ve seen) shouldn’t be missed. It’s free, so why not? The word is that next week (17th) is going to be particularly good. For those who’ve taken my advice and taken up a membership at the Cinémathèque, you can still catch some of it after the film.
Like Leaves:
Also this week is the farewell tour for the Lucksmiths. I’ve never seen them so I may well go along since it’s my last chance. If you want to know about them there are lots of reviews here.
On Saturday there is a difficult choice between three great local gigs (then again The Grace, The Metro and the Ed are all pretty close together so perhaps no choice is necessary … wouldn’t be the first time I’ve managed three gigs in one night).
UPDATE – heard about this just after posting the original email. Zulya & the Children of the Underground will play at the Dunstan Playhouse on September 11. Full details here.
Last weekend I saw a fantastic performance from Panoptique Electrical at their cd launch (shame there were so few people there). It was absolutely one of the gigs of the year, I highly recommend them so if you’re somewhere other than Adelaide watch out for whether they’re coming your way. Particularly recommended for fans of The Necks, Stars of the Lid, Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Yes To Fear, Yes To Desire is the second album from Panoptique Electrical AKA Jason Sweeney (Pretty Boy Crossover, Mist & Sea). It follows on from 2008’s Let The Darkness At You, an album which garnered significant critical praise and has become one of Sensory Projects’ best selling releases outside of Australia.
Celebrating the release of the new album Yes To Fear, Yes To Desire, Panoptique Electrical will be touring around Australia in August. The tour begins in Adelaide:
Friday 7 Aug 2009
ELECTRONIC MUSIC UNIT – EMU SPACE
Adelaide University
5th Floor, Schulz Building
(enter through Scott Theatre foyer lifts)
$10 – 8:00PM
Find Panoptique Electrical live in 2009 and you will experience the extension in the line-up, coming via the addition of Zoë Barry (cello – Ladykillers, Hope Diamond) and Jed Palmer (guitar – Bergerac, Mist & Sea, Hope Diamond), and Tristan Louth-Robins (laptoptronica – aka Red_Robin). The results are expansive depth of sound, the combination of guitar drones, Zoë’s exquisite cello work, and nuances and tones from Louth-Robins, recalling early 4ad outfits The Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil and their mesmeric recorded works.
