According to the Ezydvd site, series 1 of the early 90′s ABC police drama Phoenix will be released on dvd on October 2nd. I would assume that the second series, and hopefully the follow up series Janus will follow. This is fantastic news, this is one of the best Australian TV shows ever. Fans of one of the best recent shows from the US, The Wire, in particular are recommended to check it out as the format, with each series following one particular case.
I have previously blogged about my frustration at not being able to get this on dvd.
UPDATE – this is now on the ABC shop site as well.

Just found out that tonight The Outland Brothers are bidding farewell to Adelaide with a gig at the Jade Monkey. Sad news for us, but good news for the people of Melbourne as they’ll be contributing to the reunion of The Paradise Motel.
One other thing, by my reckoning it’ll be my 500th gig ever.

A brief edition of the gig guide to remind everyone that Ed Kuepper & the Kowalski collective are on tonight at the Gov. Details here. There will be some new live cds for sale (on the resurrected Prince Melon label) which are only sold at shows. A word of warning: last time I was at the Gov, for the excellent Robert Forster gig, it started very early, about 8:30. There was no support and Forster and his band played two sets. There doesn’t appear to be a support advertised for tonight so it could be similar (though also the other show was on a Wednesday rather than a Friday). Anyway, I won’t take any chances and I suggest that you don’t either and get there nice & early.
Update: Here’s the setlist
1st set:
- Electrical Storm
- La Di Doh
- Sleepy Head
- Miracles
- Messin’ Part 2
- Laughing Clowns
- Everything I’ve Got Belongs to You
2nd Set
- Rainy Night
- The Way I Made You Feel
- Skinny Jean
- Honey Steel’s Gold
- Yellow Dog
- Real to Me
- Eternally Yours
Encore
- When I First Came to this Town
- Little Fiddle
There were three live cds for sale, one with the same lineup (Ed, Jeffrey Wegener, Peter Oxley), one with just Ed & Jeff from the recent European tour and one from 2001 with a lineup that I don’t think I ever saw live – Johnny Gauci, Alex Compton, Dave Aston.
On the Stereo
- Ed Kuepper & the Kowalski Collective – Jean Lee + the Yellow Dog / Pretty Rough Trade 2cd (Hot)
- Ed Kuepper - Honey Steel’s Gold cd (Hot)
- Laughing Clowns – 3 MLP (Prince Melon)
- Laughing Clowns – Sometimes the Fire Dance 7″ (Prince Melon)
- Laughing Clowns – Law of Nature LP (Hot)

It’s on right now, in Australia you can watch it on SBS. Here’s the starting list. Lot’s of great riders who would be familiar to Tour de France fans. The Spanish team looks very hard to beat with 2008 Tour winner Sastre, 2007 winner Contador plus Freire, Valverde and Sanchez. There are plenty of other strong looking teams though, such as the USA, Germany, Italy, Russia and Australia. Also notable are the Luxembourg trio of the two Schleck brothers plus Kim Kirchen.
UPDATE: As expected Spain took the gold with Sanchez coming first in what was a great finish with six riders in a sprint to the finish. There was some great riding from Andy Schleck, and particularly Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara who came out of nowhere to catch up to the main group, bringing a couple of other with him (including Australia’s Michael Rogers) to boost the lead group from three riders to six. Cancellara ended up with bronze behind Italy’s Rebellin who got silver.
Lots more cycling to come with the women’s road race tomorrow, and both women’s and men’s individual time trials on Wednesday.
