I'm so glad you've written this, because as someone who was able to listen to him on the radio all the time, you've obviously got a much better perspective to write from. To me he was this amazing guy with amazing taste who allowed countless bands, from unknown to well-known, to record Peel Sessions for his show, and who brought to light incredible amounts of cutting-edge music for nearly 4 decades. That's enough, but the fact that he touched so many people's lives in such an intimate way by being on the radio every week is so special.

this is absolutely terrible news. For me, he was like an old friend, he was always there for me on weekday evenings playing the selection of music that was unique to him from black metal to gabba to drum and bass to far flung world music to grime to obscure 1950s songs, but he wouldn't ever try to talk about genres, for him it was all music, just one record after another, and he kept it more real than any other DJ for what, 40 years? He must have influenced and supported so so many underground musicians/labels/bands over the years, I can't think of anyone like him.
